Bay City Brewing Company

Last month I was lucky enough to try a new location of a previously-visited brewery, At Ease @ Barrel Harbor, and to experience a whole new brewery, AleSmith Brewing Company, while I was in San Diego for the weekend.  This month, I found myself in San Diego again with a lot of time and a lot of nothing to do.  So you know what I did?  I got drunk.

I started out the day right with a big breakfast and then a visit to the Villainous Lair where Ck picked up a new Munchkin game called MOOPS: Monster Mash-ups.  Then it was time to commence the drinking that I knew was going to happen all day long.

Our first stop was at Bay City Brewing Company.  It is located in an industrial area off the 8 freeway and close to Mission Bay (hence, the “bay” in “Bay City”).  Bay City is also about a two minute drive from Modern Times Beer.

Bay City is spacious and seemed even more so when we got there a little after it opened at noon because of the lack of people.  More folks eventually showed up and I got to meet two dogs during my time there.  Always the highlight!

Their menu isn’t extensive so I was able to pick out right away what I wanted to try.

DSC04166

I went for the basically-named San Diego Pale Ale and the one with the highest ABV, 7.7%.

Sean tried a Power Play IPA that I told him to get because I wanted to try that one too and I knew he would like it.  It measured in with a 6.9% ABV.

Carie had the Vienna Lager, a mellow 5.0%, and Ck had the Dark Lager that came in at 5.3% ABV.

The Pale Ale & the IPA were very hoppy.  Very resinous tasting and mine killed my taste buds in such a way that I was able to enjoy the rest of my pint.  Otherwise, I would’ve been scowling with every sip.  I tried little sips of Ck’s & Carie’s lagers and they were so light in comparison.  They were delicious and worth a second visit.

We sat around a pallet table that was big enough for 8 people and played a game of Munchkin. It was so much fun because our group has been talking about doing it for about as long as we’ve been playing Munchkin, which is about 3 years.  Finally!  Our wish come true!

We didn’t have a game board but not to fear!  Ck had purchased each of us our own 10-siders that corresponded to our home-game Munchkin colors.  What a thoughtful guy!

DSC04172

I languished around level 1 for so long as the rest of those munchkins rose up until Carie eventually claimed the win.

The brewtender who came to collect our empty glasses also asked if we wanted refills and the answer of course, was, “Yes, please!”  That was a nice touch of service and I will always remember Bay City as very customer-oriented.

A brew tour bus came through so it got a little crowded for about half an hour but then it cleared out and it was just our gang of four with a Frenchie guy and a couple other humans left over.

DSC04184

A woman from the tour pissed everywhere around the toilet and nowhere in the toilet.  What, did she think she was in the men’s room?  Sidenote: Bitches please!  At least clean your piss up so I don’t have to if you can’t use a toilet seat the right way.  It’s your own damn piss.  Bitches. The bathrooms were nice and clean other than that little incident.

The brew vats are set up off in the back.  They are lit up with cool blue lighting that goes with the silver of the tanks.  Cool design, owners!

There is a back patio area that I didn’t get to visit because I love sitting on my ass.  Next time I’m at Bay City Brewing, I will check it out.

I liked this brewery a lot.  It is roomy enough to deal with crowds and has some pretty tasty beer.  I would recommend starting with the light end of their spectrum and you won’t be disappointed.

The location is another great thing about Bay City that will definitely bring me back in.  Parking could be better but when I was there, parking wasn’t an issue so I won’t complain.  I’ll just say, I would hate to have to find close parking after 4:30 on most weekdays and all time during weekend nights.

Bay City Brewing Company is a must stop if you are in the Mission Bay area.  I had a great time there and will be back, for sure.

At Ease @ Barrel Harbor

Barrel Harbor is a San Diego brewery with a great reputation and a decent local distribution.  Their original location, 2575 Pioneer Ave. #104, Vista CA , attracts all types of people.  From hipster beer-snobs, like the two pictured here, dsc03959

to casual one-pinters, it seems everyone likes Barrel Harbor.  And now there is a whole new plethora of reasons to like them.

In January of 2017, @BarrelHarbor opened a new location.  They collaborated with At Ease Games and popped up right next door, which gave way to one of the greatest tap rooms ever: At Ease @ Barrel Harbor.

dsc03972

So the brewery is connected to a game shop, which i thought was really cool.  What goes together better than beer and games?  I looked around At Ease Games for a little while and my friends ended up buying some Munchkin card packs and a new Cthulhu game.  When we were done there, we headed next door to begin our Sunday of brewery-hopping.

The new location is huge.  Located at 8990 Miramar Rd., San Diego CA, they’ve got 16 taps and so many different delicious choices, I could’ve spent all day there.  Here is a picture of their menu board & current offerings:

dsc03949

It was close to noon when I walked into At Ease @ Barrel Harbor and it was empty, save for the lone brewtender.  I wanted to start with something light so I tried the South Island Pilsner with a 5.2% ABV.  The beer was served in a tall, kinda skinny pint glass that made it seem really fancy.  dsc03941The Old Man tried the Barrel Harbor Red Ale with the same ABV.  Ck had what I had and Carie had a Blunderbuss Belgian Blonde that charts at 6.5%.

My pilsner was a golden color and it was cold and not flat.  In fact, there were so many bubbles coming off the bottom that it looked like champagne.  It tasted crisp and a bit citrusy.  I liked it a lot.

Everybody else enjoyed their choices as well.  When it was time for a second round, I wanted something harder so I sent Sean up to the bar with the explicit instruction to find me something “strong and good.”  When he came back with my Little Nugget IPA, I was not disappointed.  It was 7.4% and didn’t taste overwhelmingly hoppy.  It went down smooth and had a clean finish.  I wasn’t paying attention to what everyone ordered for their second beer so I can only say that the two I tried were top notch, tasty, & full of flavor.

dsc03953There is an area in the middle of the place where you can buy merchandise like shirts and pint glasses engraved with the Barrel Harbor logo.

They have demo games available at that counter too.  You can choose any game you want to play and if you like it enough, you can go next door and buy it.

At the rear is the game room.  This is where the experienced role-players go.  There are gaming tables set up so you can spread out and conduct a real adventure with your friends.

The longer we sat drinking, the more people showed up and headed to the back.  The game room is a popular addition to this brewery.

Since At Ease @ Barrel Harbor is located near a military base, they offer discounts for the service, police, & firefighters.

There are specials  listed on the menu outside like the BOGO 50% on Tuesdays.dsc03946

Like most breweries, Barrel Harbor allows pets and children.  The pets part I like; don’t get me started on the kids.

I loved how this location is so large.  I should’ve looked to see what the max capacity is.  It seems like it could never get too crowded and there are plenty of places to sit.

I’ve been to a lot of breweries but I have to say that At Ease @ Barrel Harbor is the one of my favorites.  The very concept of a game store connected to a brewery is genius.  This is the kind of brewery I will go back to whenever I am in #SanDiego.  It’s fun to exercise your brain with games while also killing those same brain cells with alcohol.  The circle of life.

Queen of Game Night, twice in a row

I don’t brag often.  I think it’s bad form to brag.  But when you win at Munchkin game night twice in a row, it’s really something to brag about.

Image result for bragging

You like me cause I won, right?

The first night I won was on Sean’s birthday, June 30th, which was a Thursday.

Image result for june 30 birthday

Happy, happy, joy, joy!

It was our usual game night and we played a mish-mashed version with several expansion packs being played.  Sean won the first game.  And it wasn’t just because it was his birthday either, he won fair and square.  Fair is Fair, right, Billie Jean?

Image result for billie jean fair is fair

He won because he kicks ass at Munchkin and everyone is constantly fighting him and throwing curses and traps his way.  But he still prevailed and won the first game.  But his victory was not to last long; as we played the second game, a second winner emerged.

I was stuck behind everyone for a little while but then I found myself on level 3.  Not too shabby, eh?  And then I drew a monster worth 2 levels and no one seemed aware of that.  So I wasn’t going to go preaching it around and then I whined my way out of anyone trying to defeat me.

Well, the levels and the treasures paid off in abundance.  I got two “Go up a level” cards so I found myself on level 9 after selling a shit load of items to go up an extra two more levels.  I was reigning supreme!

So needless to say, I won handsomely.  I kicked their mother-fucking asses to the curb!

The second night of #winning came during a Munchkin Marvel edition war.

Image result for level 15 monster munchkin

I ended up being super powerful and I maintained the winning level throughout most of the game.  I was able to have two ally’s so I had the Hulk for a +5 and a lesser +1 bonus for Falcon.

I mean, I had a +3 Captain America’s Shield, a +4 Mejilnor, and I could carry two extra cards in my hand in addition to the +5 in Powers that I had.  How could I go wrong?

When it came my turn to go from level 9 to the winning level 10, my old man seriously cock-blocked me.

Image result for cock blocked

He played a trap card that enabled him to switch hands with me so I had to give him my all powerful cards in exchange for his shitty cards.

But shitty cards don’t matter when you pull a level 2 villain.  I had him beat by so many points and then I played my duplicate card and I could not be conquered!

Image result for i have conquered

I came, I saw, I conquered…fuck yeah!

No matter what they threw at me, I was the winner.  I could not stop winning!  I won…again!  I didn’t get too excited because, remember, bragging is bad form, but in my blog, which no one reads, I can brag all I fucking want to and you can’t do shit about it.  So fuck off, bitches.  I won at Munchkin and that’s that.

A Royal Death, a Royal Birthday, and a Royal Drunk

Today we lost Prince, and I mourn. RIP 1958-2016.

However, today we also gained a Queen.  Not some ancient bag who presides over the

“God Save The Queen..We Mean It, Man”

islands of the UK who is happening to be celebrating her 90th birthday, but none other than…me!  Tonight I became the Queen Champion of Munchkin for 3 weeks in a row!  #Winning is everything!  Put a crown on me, please!

Crown me the queen of all that is drunk!

This particular game night found the four of us playing Munchkin Booty mixed with the Jump The Shark expansion number 2.

Steve-Jackson-Games-Munchkin-Booty-2-Jump-the-Shark-312x420

I had decided earlier that my goal for the night would be to use the accent I am given.  In Booty, you have “Accents” instead of “Race.”  So I promised myself that I would use my accent to really get into the game.  I also told Sean on the way over to CK & Carie’s house that I planned on helping him win.  I felt kinda bad that he gets attacked all the time and never wins because of it.  I wanted to Stand By My Man. Thanks, Tammy Wynette for the reminder!

At first, Ck came out fighting with 2 “Go Up A Level” cards while Sean and I only had one

each of those.  So we all ended up out of level 1, except for Carie, by the time we took our first turns.

I ended up being a British Navy guy so the whole night, I tied hard to keep my accent up.  “Ahoy, then matey…”  just goes so far any innumerable amount of times.  I broke my promise and I started talking all regular, you know, with no accent whatsoever.  So I guess I was more of an American Navy guy.  With no discernable accent, that is!

I helped Sean all I could to get ahead of Ck, but then the old man bit back.  He attacked me with a monster I couldn’t beat without help, that I got from Carie, but my days of helping out the old man…over!   I found myself on Level 9 along with Ck, and thanks to pure luck, he didn’t go up a level when it was his turn leaving me wide open to take the lead.

And take the lead I did.  I pulled a Level 15 monster as I was breaking down the door and all three of them came at me with the best they had but I was winning by too much of a margin to make a difference.  I think I ultimately won by 2 after the back-stabbers were done.  And that’s nothing to sneeze at.  Seriously, don’t sneeze right now.

So I won for the third time in a row.  Munchkin winners seem to happen in cycles.

Before I was the reigning champion, Carie was.  Before that, it jumped between all 4 of us.  We all just know the game very well.  When someone wins, every other player comes totally close and by the end of most games, we are all at Levels 8 & 9.  We all need a challenge. Any takers?

#winning is not everything…what?

Another #GameNight has come and gone.  We had it on a Wednesday this week because Ck has to fly to Fort Lauderdale for work Thursday morning at 6:30.  I hope he enjoys that overcast and humid 80 degree weather they’re having there in Florida.

We started out with Becks for Sean & I and Heinekens for Ck & Carie.  We had dinner, Carie made cheeseburgers with Morningstar Farms Grillers for us with chips on the side.  She spoils us too much.  Ck is a lucky man.

Throughout the night, I just kept drinking more and more Becks.  Actually, everyone kept drinking more and more.  Becks and Heinekens were being had by all.  Pretty soon, we were all 3 sheets and loving it.

So this round, we played the Conan Munchkin set with the Munchkin #4 expansion, Need For Steed, mixed in.  It was a ton of fun.  Except I didn’t win.  I came so damn close.  It’s been months since I’ve gotten a taste of the high life and I could’ve used it last night.

          +                =

So much for the adage that #winning isn’t everything.  Whoever said that is a loser.  I said that tonight and I lost.  See what can happen to you?  It is a scientific fact that the more I am losing in Munchkin, the more I will drink in beer.  So i’m actually do the economy a favor.

But, hey, on the brighter side…it’s fun and good to drink beers all the time wherever you go and whatever you do.  Instead of an iced tea, get a Blue Moon on draft.  As long as it’s not flat, it’ll cure whatever ails ya.  Just make sure they put that god damned orange slice on your beer!

I Won Star Munchkin the Double-B Way

The Double-B Way, you ask.  It sounds like an old timey western saloon.  But it means the Becks, Budweiser way.  Which seems to be the combination for an outstanding win of Star Munchkin. #munchkinandbeer #drunkmunchkining

So Wednesday night, Sean and I got together with Ck & Carie,  all three of them better known as: https://www.facebook.com/chuy.poluka.  #barroomjunies  We were all excited to be doing our game night again since we had taken a couple of weeks off for the holiday season.  And the holidays brought a slew of new Munchkin games to try out in the coming months.  I can’t wait!

We started out with a 12 pack of Beck’s.  German quality?  Is it made in Germany?  I don’t know.  I don’t really care.  As long as it gets me drunk.  It tastes pretty decent, too.

Between the four of us, the 12 pack was gone pretty quickly.  Out of necessity, we switched to Budweiser.  It was the same old, water-tasting, 5% Budweiser that i’m used to at home.  But damn, did we pound those things!  Cheap beer is easy to guzzle.  Go #cheapbeer!

I got drunk, Sean got drunk, Ck got drunk, Carie got maybe buzzed (she didn’t drink much).  We all had an awesome time.  We made plans to check out the new @HoparrazziBrewingCo on the 17th.  We also made plans for the Pirate Fest at the Anaheim Phoenix Club on the 23rd https://www.facebook.com/events/1709814889304829/.  I know we will have a great time at that because we get to dress up in our pirate gear and get drunk right down the street from my house.  Instead of going 45 minutes to the Renaissance Faire, paying $8.50 for one beer, getting almost drunk on those $8.50 beers, and then having to drive another 45 minutes home.  Much better!

Well, another drunk game night under my belt.  #Winning with the double-B’s!  That makes it seem like i’m promoting my breast size, which I am certainly not doing.  Get your drunk mind out of the gutter.
