Red Tandem Brewery

I’ve had my eye on Oxnard for a while.  I see in the news that the weather is perfect there which makes me want to retire in the nard of the Ox.  So when the Eichels invited us to the Oxnard Steampunk Fest I was more than eager to check out the town.

We got dressed up in our finest and paraded around Heritage Square for a couple

of hours and then, as per usual, spent more time at the bar than mixing with the crowd.  We got dinner and went back to our room to drink Heinekens.  All of a sudden, we had the whole night before us with no immediate plan.  So we decided to hit the town.

I chose Red Tandem Brewery because they were the closest one to our hotel and we wanted to Uber since we had been drinking for most of the day.  DSC07921  The brewery & tasting room is in a strip mall kind of area surrounded by nice beachy-type houses in the Oxnard Shores community.  We arrived early in the evening when it was still light outside and snapped this picture of one of the houses all decorated up for Halloween. Getting in the spirit…I love it!

DSC07922  There is a bright red sign letting you know you are exactly where you want to be… minutes from the beach on a mildly temperate evening in October about to get drunk on “nanobrew.”  Good times for the forecast!

The interior of @RedTandemBrews is on the small side but there is seating for at least 25 people.  The menu is also on the small side but that’s not a bad thing when they advertise on their website as a “nanobrewery.”  At least you know what to expect when you walk in.  There are only 7 different brews but everyone in my group got something unique so the limited selection wasn’t an issue.  The Old Man snapped this clear shot of the brew board.

DSC07927

I started off with my usual, a 6.4% IPA called C-Hag.  The hop level was just about perfect.  It has a measurement of 47 IBUs and was not shocking to my palette at all.  It was so good that I stuck with the C-Hag for the rest of the night, which ended up being about 3 beers long.  Sean got the Beach Blonde Ale with a high 5.9% ABV for a blonde.  He loved it but he also experimented with the Island Fox Red Ale and some of that C-Hag.  Everything we tried was a taste of perfection.  You can tell that the brewery really cares about what it is producing and takes the time and attention to detail that is necessary.

Red Tandem has some art on the walls (possibly for sale?), a chess board,

and a barrel set up with games to play.  We bought our own game of Timeline because we’re pretty good at this brewery thing; this wasn’t our first rodeo.  We met a nice guy named AJ.  He was just drinking and waiting for a friend so Ck asked him to join our game.  He caught on right away and we all had a great time.  I only won once but I’m glad about that one.  Every time I play I try to remember one card from the whole night.  Last month, I memorized the death of Billy the Kid as happening in 1881 and as fate would have it, I drew that card this time and stole the game!

As I was walking around the place taking pictures, the owner and brewer, Mark, asked if I wanted a tour.  I said yes right away because I love seeing all the equipment of the whole brewing process.  He was very friendly and quickly went over all the steps.

It was information overload during the tour and I don’t remember much of what Mark told me but he showed me the vats, the 55 lb bags of grain they use, the door to the temperature controlled fermenting room, and the refrigerated room where they keep the kegs and other ingredients.  All the brewing is done on site in the back.  It’s a small operation but extremely efficient.

I really liked Red Tandem Brewery.  From the location to the brews, they are tops in my opinion.  It’s too bad that I’m hardly ever in Oxnard because this is a place I would revisit again and again.  Maybe someday I will make it back there.  I hope Mark is behind the bar.  And I hope I get a better Uber driver than the crazy lady who picked us up at the end of the night.

Cheers!

Societe Brewing Company

With good traffic, I can make it to #SanDiego in an hour and a half.  That’s the perfect amount of time to anticipate all that the south-most county in California has to offer.  With a plethora of breweries and map full of comic book shops there is always something to do.  I was in San Diego last weekend for a wedding and had a night to kill so I set my radar to find the coolest brewery I’d never been to so far and I came up with Societe Brewing Company.

It was around 6:00 on a Saturday night when I showed up with the Old Man, Ck, & Carie.  The tasting room was packed as well as almost every table outside.  We quick snagged an empty spot and contemplated the menu.

DSC07468

@SocieteBrewing has four different styles of beer that they brew: Out West, Old World, Stygian, & Feral.  Sean and I went traditional with IPA selections from Out West.  I got the Publican, a 5.5% Small IPA and the Old Man tried the 6.9% Fiddler IPA.  We were happy with our choices and they were just hoppy enough.  They were both light in color but the flavors were developed and foremost.

Carie went with a 5.6% Belgian Blonde called Harlot from the Old World menu.  Ck wanted it fruity so he chose one of the Feral brews called Henchman, a 6.1% that was $10 for a 12 ounce pour.  It is also known as a fruited beer and it can be called feral, or “wild,” because a different type of bacteria is used in the fermentation that produces different flavors.

DSC07473  Societe doesn’t offer flights but you can get up to two samples if you are on the fence about what you want to try.  They have a great selection so deciding could be a problem.  There was one thing about Societe that I didn’t like.  That was their “full pours” being 12 ounces instead of 16.  Lame.  Don’t know why it bothers me but I kind of feel like I am getting gypped out of that extra 4 ounces.DSC07475

There are also bottles to go and growlers you can get filled at the bar.

Something that I always enjoy seeing are the brewery tours and Societe offers them on Saturday’s at 2:00 and 4:00 pm.  DSC07478

Dogs are just as welcome as people at Societe Brewing and they actually have merchandise for sale for the pooches.  Talk about a stylish puppy, wearing a Societe dog tee and munching on beer bones!

People-sized shirts for women are available for $17.

DSC07472

The decor is old fashioned and whimsical.  I loved the black silhouettes on the wall with their steampunk-style lights in front of every one.

DSC07485  And the piano in the corner was cool.  A good selection of games lined the top but we had come prepared with our own cards to play.  We’ve been hooked on one called Timeline.  It’s addicting, fast, and fun and you only need 2 or more to play.  It’s perfect for a brewery.

Societe is great for a night of hanging out and trying different styles of brews.  The atmosphere is relaxed and the place is well-run.  There’s a menu board that lists what upcoming food trucks will be there and sometimes they have events.  They’ve got a charitable night with a dog rescue receiving the proceeds.  It was National Sour Day when we went so they had specials on their Feral selections.

DSC07467

I’ll be back to Societe Brewing Co. and there’s not much that I think should change.  They’ve got this down.  I can’t wait to try some of their 7%+ IPA’s and I’m always ready for a game of Timeline.

Todos las cervezas de Mexico

Recently, I got my international drunk on in Mexico for a few days.  Most of the beer drinking I did was in the airports on the way there and back.  I’m not usually a cocktails kind of lady but I had more than my fair share of them.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             DSC05270

The first day started off at the AeroMexico counter, waiting until they opened up at 4:30 in the damn morning.  The Old Man had heard AeroMexico offers free beers on their flights so I was excited to get on that plane and get me one.  But alas, alcohol is not served in flight before 11:00 am.  I was kinda hoping that as soon as we hit that time zone line where it went from 9:00 to 11:00, that they would break out the drink carts and it would be a big party flight all the way to Mexico City.  No such luck there.

We had about an hour to kill in the Mexico City airport after we had gone through customs.  So we found a joint called the Pizza Bar that was close to our gate.  Now we could finally have our first beers of vacation!  I got a Dos Equis and the Old Man scored with a 4.9% Bohemia.  Then we said “Adios!” to Mexico City.

On the next flight we had the unfortunate luck of being in the very back row.  By the time the drink cart got to us, all they had left was Corona Light.  Never one to scoff at a free brew, I graciously accepted that weak-ass 4.2% and drank it right up.

DSC05752We landed buzzed in Cancun and thought it was a good omen that the tower is sponsored by Corona.  Our next opportunity to drink came in the van ride to the hotel.  The driver had a cooler of Corona Extras and bottled waters up in the passenger’s seat.  We both had one of each and the drive went, well… less than smooth.  He took us around the little town called Puerto Morelos and then dropped us off at El Cid.

The rest of the night was devoted to serious drinking.  No more of that under 5% beer.  We started with champagne and ended with shots of tequila, spiced rum and vomit.  It was a steamy, sweaty, drunk night.  The right kind of start to a vacation of excess.

For the second day, we didn’t drink any beer at all.  What?  WTF, you say.  That’s right, no beer.  After I filled up on breakfast, I filled up on some champagne.  We were dying to go to the pool bar so we got changed and took the plunge.  We swam up and got our insulated cups filled to the top with Pina Coladas.

Throughout the day, we tried every single cocktail on the menu.  We had blended drinks, drinks on the rocks, sweet drinks, and fun colored drinks.  We tried Mai Tais, Daiquiris with fresh bananas, Pina Coladas, Blue Hawaiians (blue Pina Coladas), Margaritas (lime & strawberry), Mojitos, Jungle Juice, and a drink called the Cola de Iguana.  That translates to the Ass of the Iguana.  The drink was a bright green and tasted a lot better than iguana butt.  We had damn near everything.  But we barely got drunk.  We were able to maintain the whole day.  I guess that’s the result of watered down drinks.  Not that I minded, because I sure got a buzz going on that lasted all day and night.

DSC05508 (2) Our next full day was spent on the beach, in the pool, and in the town.  We found a spot right on the beach called Cancun Billy’s and sat there drinking Dos Equis out of bottles.  The view was spectacular.  The beers kept coming until we finally had to break away so we could get drunk somewhere else.

DSC05714  We walked around Puerto Morelos with our insulated cups filled with beer we had purchased at the Oxxo, it’s a convenience store like 7-11.  Everyone who knows me, knows how much I love 7-11 so of course I had to go visit it’s Mexican cousin.  The beer at Oxxo was $1.  You cannot beat that anywhere.  I had a Corona and Sean went for a Modelo.  By the time we were done with our beers, the sun was setting and it was time to taxi back to El Cid.

The last day was so sad, we didn’t want to leave.  So we started drinking early.  A banana daiquiri from the swim up bar was our first.  We packed and checked out, trying to remain buzzed for as long as we could.  For a variety of reason’s, we got to the airport in Cancun more than 3 hours early.  What a good opportunity to get even drunker!  And we did!

DSC05724  There was a little cafe called Guacamole that we sat at for a little while and drank a few Dos Equis each.  Then we went through security and found the Dos Equis Snack Bar near our gate.  It was a good place to make base until we had to board our flight.

I ordered 2 Dos Equis as soon as we sat down and when we were half way though drinking them, Sean noticed the “Super Size” Dos Equis!  A liter of Dos Equis!

DSC05726

It was a huge ass bottle and I had a great time killing mine.  We got FOMO when it came time to board so Sean ran to the Convenience Store to grab our last Bohemias of the trip. We finished those on the tram ride to the plane.  We were 3 sheets by this time.  DSC05739

On the first flight back, we ordered Heinekens.  We enjoyed the beers of Mexico but we wanted something that was 5% ABV and nothing had been so far.  Yeah, we were happily drunk for a while and then it started to slowly wear off.  Sobriety started setting in.  And they weren’t serving anymore cervazas.  FML.

We couldn’t take drinking anymore on the second flight home, we couldn’t even get enough water.  They should give you a whole bottle, not just a few ounces pour.  What is it?  A tasting?  There is a fine line between drinking and drinking too much.  I got to that line and crossed it.

Not a big deal…lesson learned.  I will probably repeat it next time I fly so maybe my lesson isn’t really learned at all.  Hmmm.

I had a wonderful time drinking beers in Mexico.  It is one thing to have a Corona at a BBQ in Anaheim, but an experience to have a domestic beer of the country in which you are traveling.  I can’t wait to do it again!  Keep drinking!

Bay City Brewing Company

Last month I was lucky enough to try a new location of a previously-visited brewery, At Ease @ Barrel Harbor, and to experience a whole new brewery, AleSmith Brewing Company, while I was in San Diego for the weekend.  This month, I found myself in San Diego again with a lot of time and a lot of nothing to do.  So you know what I did?  I got drunk.

I started out the day right with a big breakfast and then a visit to the Villainous Lair where Ck picked up a new Munchkin game called MOOPS: Monster Mash-ups.  Then it was time to commence the drinking that I knew was going to happen all day long.

Our first stop was at Bay City Brewing Company.  It is located in an industrial area off the 8 freeway and close to Mission Bay (hence, the “bay” in “Bay City”).  Bay City is also about a two minute drive from Modern Times Beer.

Bay City is spacious and seemed even more so when we got there a little after it opened at noon because of the lack of people.  More folks eventually showed up and I got to meet two dogs during my time there.  Always the highlight!

DSC04180

The Pug that wandered in from the storm

Their menu isn’t extensive so I was able to pick out right away what I wanted to try.

DSC04166

I went for the basically-named San Diego Pale Ale and the one with the highest ABV, 7.7%.

Sean tried a Power Play IPA that I told him to get because I wanted to try that one too and I knew he would like it.  It measured in with a 6.9% ABV.

Carie had the Vienna Lager, a mellow 5.0%, and Ck had the Dark Lager that came in at 5.3% ABV.

The Pale Ale & the IPA were very hoppy.  Very resinous tasting and mine killed my taste buds in such a way that I was able to enjoy the rest of my pint.  Otherwise, I would’ve been scowling with every sip.  I tried little sips of Ck’s & Carie’s lagers and they were so light in comparison.  They were delicious and worth a second visit.

We sat around a pallet table that was big enough for 8 people and played a game of Munchkin. It was so much fun because our group has been talking about doing it for about as long as we’ve been playing Munchkin, which is about 3 years.  Finally!  Our wish come true!

We didn’t have a game board but not to fear!  Ck had purchased each of us our own 10-siders that corresponded to our home-game Munchkin colors.  What a thoughtful guy!

DSC04172

I languished around level 1 for so long as the rest of those munchkins rose up until Carie eventually claimed the win.

The brewtender who came to collect our empty glasses also asked if we wanted refills and the answer of course, was, “Yes, please!”  That was a nice touch of service and I will always remember Bay City as very customer-oriented.

A brew tour bus came through so it got a little crowded for about half an hour but then it cleared out and it was just our gang of four with a Frenchie guy and a couple other humans left over.

DSC04184

A woman from the tour pissed everywhere around the toilet and nowhere in the toilet.  What, did she think she was in the men’s room?  Sidenote: Bitches please!  At least clean your piss up so I don’t have to if you can’t use a toilet seat the right way.  It’s your own damn piss.  Bitches. The bathrooms were nice and clean other than that little incident.

DSC04167

Behind the scenes at Bay City Brewing Co.

The brew vats are set up off in the back.  They are lit up with cool blue lighting that goes with the silver of the tanks.  Cool design, owners!

There is a back patio area that I didn’t get to visit because I love sitting on my ass.  Next time I’m at Bay City Brewing, I will check it out.

I liked this brewery a lot.  It is roomy enough to deal with crowds and has some pretty tasty beer.  I would recommend starting with the light end of their spectrum and you won’t be disappointed.

The location is another great thing about Bay City that will definitely bring me back in.  Parking could be better but when I was there, parking wasn’t an issue so I won’t complain.  I’ll just say, I would hate to have to find close parking after 4:30 on most weekdays and all time during weekend nights.

Bay City Brewing Company is a must stop if you are in the Mission Bay area.  I had a great time there and will be back, for sure.

At Ease @ Barrel Harbor

Barrel Harbor is a San Diego brewery with a great reputation and a decent local distribution.  Their original location, 2575 Pioneer Ave. #104, Vista CA , attracts all types of people.  From hipster beer-snobs, like the two pictured here, dsc03959

to casual one-pinters, it seems everyone likes Barrel Harbor.  And now there is a whole new plethora of reasons to like them.

In January of 2017, @BarrelHarbor opened a new location.  They collaborated with At Ease Games and popped up right next door, which gave way to one of the greatest tap rooms ever: At Ease @ Barrel Harbor.

dsc03972

So the brewery is connected to a game shop, which i thought was really cool.  What goes together better than beer and games?  I looked around At Ease Games for a little while and my friends ended up buying some Munchkin card packs and a new Cthulhu game.  When we were done there, we headed next door to begin our Sunday of brewery-hopping.

The new location is huge.  Located at 8990 Miramar Rd., San Diego CA, they’ve got 16 taps and so many different delicious choices, I could’ve spent all day there.  Here is a picture of their menu board & current offerings:

dsc03949

It was close to noon when I walked into At Ease @ Barrel Harbor and it was empty, save for the lone brewtender.  I wanted to start with something light so I tried the South Island Pilsner with a 5.2% ABV.  The beer was served in a tall, kinda skinny pint glass that made it seem really fancy.  dsc03941The Old Man tried the Barrel Harbor Red Ale with the same ABV.  Ck had what I had and Carie had a Blunderbuss Belgian Blonde that charts at 6.5%.

My pilsner was a golden color and it was cold and not flat.  In fact, there were so many bubbles coming off the bottom that it looked like champagne.  It tasted crisp and a bit citrusy.  I liked it a lot.

Everybody else enjoyed their choices as well.  When it was time for a second round, I wanted something harder so I sent Sean up to the bar with the explicit instruction to find me something “strong and good.”  When he came back with my Little Nugget IPA, I was not disappointed.  It was 7.4% and didn’t taste overwhelmingly hoppy.  It went down smooth and had a clean finish.  I wasn’t paying attention to what everyone ordered for their second beer so I can only say that the two I tried were top notch, tasty, & full of flavor.

dsc03953There is an area in the middle of the place where you can buy merchandise like shirts and pint glasses engraved with the Barrel Harbor logo.

They have demo games available at that counter too.  You can choose any game you want to play and if you like it enough, you can go next door and buy it.

At the rear is the game room.  This is where the experienced role-players go.  There are gaming tables set up so you can spread out and conduct a real adventure with your friends.

The longer we sat drinking, the more people showed up and headed to the back.  The game room is a popular addition to this brewery.

Since At Ease @ Barrel Harbor is located near a military base, they offer discounts for the service, police, & firefighters.

There are specials  listed on the menu outside like the BOGO 50% on Tuesdays.dsc03946

Like most breweries, Barrel Harbor allows pets and children.  The pets part I like; don’t get me started on the kids.

I loved how this location is so large.  I should’ve looked to see what the max capacity is.  It seems like it could never get too crowded and there are plenty of places to sit.

I’ve been to a lot of breweries but I have to say that At Ease @ Barrel Harbor is the one of my favorites.  The very concept of a game store connected to a brewery is genius.  This is the kind of brewery I will go back to whenever I am in #SanDiego.  It’s fun to exercise your brain with games while also killing those same brain cells with alcohol.  The circle of life.

Getting Trivial with Leonardine Industries

Ever since OC Pop Quiz and the OC Weekly teamed up to host a trivia competition in which the Lagalots failed miserably back in early October, we haven’t been to a regular Wednesday trivia night at @BackstreetBrew.  It’s not like we were ashamed to show our loser faces, we just got really distracted by life.  But last Wednesday, we decided to have a night out with some fun trivia on the side.

I checked Groupon and there was a deal that I quickly bought.  It was $22.00 for 4 pints of beer and 4 flights.  A great bargain in itself but Groupon let me use a coupon code that gave me $5.00 off so in the end, I got my deal for $17.00.  It was worth downloading the Groupon app and kept me in beers the whole night.

The Old Man and I started with our flights.

Image result for flight of beer

I got a sampling of the lighter lagers and ales with my heaviest being a 5.9% called Trifecta Pale Ale.  Sean got some of the stronger ones and his favorite was the Holy Shizz Imperial Red, it’s a 12% or something close to that.  An interesting and tasty beer I tried was the Mango & Habanero.  It was so sweet at first and kinda pulpy when you held it up to the light.  It went down smooth.  And then the habanero kicked in and my throat burned like a mother fucker.  Sweet and spicy is a great combination.

For our second round of flights, we both just got our favorites from the menu and shared each one.  When it came time for us to get our pints, I went with a Set Sail IPA and so did the Old Man.  We weren’t even finished with those before we were ordering our last round of pints.  We were a little tipsy so we stuck with a 5% Vienna Lager to close the night out and the brewery down.

There were six teams competing that night and it was only the second time that Leonardine Industries has played.  The usual suspects were there, like Quiz On My Face, but there were some new faces & team names too.  Quizmaster Doug was already there when we arrived so we knew it was gonna be a fun and fast evening.

In the first round, Leonardine did okay.  We knew that Sturgeon is prized for caviar and that Papa Johns is the official sponsor of the Super Bowl and that the first animal

Image result for first dog in space

in space was a dog but we didn’t know who Quasimodo fell in love with (Esmerelda, btw) or that the latin root of Malaria is “bad air.”  We ended up getting 4 points out of six and we got the bonus wrong.  It was about the Super Bowl attendance and we guessed 120,000 because we don’t know anything about the capacity of stadiums.  But Team Ramrod knew and when they rolled the die, they got to steal a point from another team.  Luckily they didn’t choose us and we came in tied for second place.

Round 2 was hard.  It wasn’t about balls so we had that in our favor.  The task was to name 10 musicians/bands that toured in 2015 and made more than 50 million or something like that.  The only thing we could think of to do was to name all the artists that we hear about all the damn time on TMZ.  That turned out to be a pretty good strategy because we got seven points for a total of 11 and the lead.  Thanks Harvey Levin.  Yeah, yeah…I know you’re a lawyer.

Image result for harvey levin i'm a lawyer

The next round was worth a total of 9 points.  We got the first three right, which was the top tourist states in the US.  In a way that was too easy, we guessed California, New York and Florida and they were all correct.  The next three were so fucking difficult that I don’t even think that the fully assembled Lagalots could’ve known the answers.  We had to name 3 of the 6 musicians who had won an Oscar and also had a Billboard hit.  Wow.  Who the fuck knows that kind of information?  Certainly not us as we guessed wrong on all three.  The last question was to name 3 styles of iPod besides Touch and Mini.  Sean knew the Shuffle and the Nano but we couldn’t think of a third so we only got 2 right.  We got the bonus question wrong by the smallest fraction.  I thought the iPod came out in 2002 but it turned out to be 2001.  Two teams got it right and got to roll the die.  But the good news for us was that we were still in the lead with 16 points.

The picture round, the 4th one, was next and we had to name ten fruits with shitty ass quality pictures as the only way to identify them.  We did well, and I was really proud of myself for knowing the Dragon Fruit Image result for dragon fruitbecause I had just made a dragon fruit and pineapple sorbet the day before.  We didn’t know acai, we got figs and dates mixed up, and Sean had never even heard of a lychee.  We got seven out of ten and we were feeling pretty confident.  But we lost our lead and Quiz On My Face took the reigns.

Round 5…the Guess Who round.  We have a rule that I’ve stated before and I will state again now.  No matter how sure you think you are, don’t turn in the answer until after the 3rd clue.  That way, you’re sure and you get points instead of none at all.  So I know that rule but I like to break rules, i’m just that way.  I knew the answer was Gwen Stefani on the second clue.  Image result for gwen stefani no doubtSo did everyone else.  One team turned in their answer after the first clue and 2 other teams besides us turned in after the second one.  You don’t ask a question in Anaheim about Gwen Stefani and expect no one to know the answer.

Round 6 was the final one.  It’s just like round 1.  Six questions and a bonus.  Well we’re pretty damn good at these easy trivia questions by now so we got 5 correct.  We knew that James Earl Jones provided the voice for Mustafa (except the Old Man had to ask me who Mustafa was) and that crochet is like knitting but with one hook and that giant, one-eyed creatures are called Cyclops.  And thanks to the power of the eraser, we figured out how to spell “subpoena” after a few trial and errors.  The question we got wrong was in regard to the host of a foodie show on the Travel Channel.  I thought I knew the answer, Andrew Zimmern, but I was sadly mistaken.  We also got the bonus wrong again.  It was about the weight of the heaviest burger ever made and we guessed 3 pounds but it was actually something like 14 pounds.  Crazy ass meat-eaters.

Image result for huge burger

When the final results were announced, we had a score of 34 and we were in third place.  Quiz On My Face and Ramrod tied for first so there was a quiz off!  In 50 seconds, the teams had to name as many Las Vegas Strip hotels as they could.  The winner, with 13 named, was Quiz On My Face.  Congrats to them and to a battle hard fought.  We found out later that night that it was Quiz’s first time winning and they have been doing trivia night longer than we have.  So extra congratulations go out to those boys.

SCV Brewmasters

As a matter of formality, we visited the Santa Clarita Valley Brewmasters Pirate Beer Festival.  And damn, did we have a good time!

I have only been to one other event like this.  An event that celebrates drunkenness and promotes revelry.  But this one, this one, was the best.  It started off at noon.  We parked and walked to the entrance with 2 minutes to spare.  We wanted to get every moment possible to drink the selections offered by the various breweries represented.

At first, we wondered around aimlessly.

dsc02211

We walked the plank of the LAPG booth and got prizes in return.  They were out of most of the prizes because of the selfish VIP’s who had stolen all the precious before the general public was allowed in.

Until we saw that Temblor was represented with 4 fine choices of beer.  I had a 661 and something else I seem to have lost the name of.  But it was wonderful to see Temblor at this event.  It’s about halfway between Bakersfield and Anaheim so you feel like they made the effort and you made the effort and everyone gets to drink in the end.

There were so many breweries represented.  We tried a Redhead from FireHouse Brewing Co. and also a Brunette.  They both gave about the same head but the Redhead was much tastier to my palette.

We sampled from Absolution, Elysium, Firestone Walker, Lagunitas and Golden Road.  Most we had heard of but there were some new names in the mix.  Like Kona, who poured two fine selections and gave away lei’s to the mass public.

dsc02219

Here is some of our crew enjoying the fine pours that were to be had.

There were a ton of pirate themed decorations spread throughout the area the brewfest took place in.  We got many pictures playing amongst the toys.

I kinda thought we could last from open until close, that would be noon til 5:00.  But, avast ye matey’s, we didn’t manage it.  We just drank until we could drink no more.  Our VIP friends left at around 3:00 and we drank through until about 4:00.

There were many fine beers and I wish I were a better reporter because I would be able to credit them all.  Instead, I drank myself silly and I can’t remember shit.  If it wasn’t for pictures and the list Carie made, I would be lost.

When it came down to closing the night out, we just ended up playing card games in Ck & Carie’s hotel room.  We played Quiddler and I came in last.  Yay!

But we had a great time and I would do it all again next year.  The End.

Coronado Brewing Company

San Diego is pretty classy when it comes to breweries.  The Coronado Brewing Company is no exception.  @CoronadoBrewing has been around for 20 years and they have made a good name for themselves with locals and tourists alike.

There are a few locations around San Diego County in which to sample from their wares.  Last Sunday I visited the Tasting Room on Knoxville.  It was my first time so I did not know what to expect but I was immediately happy about their stellar selection.  It took me a little while to finally decide on a Punk’In Drublic at 8%.

This pumpkin ale has so much flavor and a spicy aftertaste.  Not the kind of spicy that makes your nose runny but the nutmeg/cinnamon combination prevalent in many Fall dessert creations.  It’s not too sweet…in fact, it’s perfect!

The old man and I have about the same tastes for beer so he went with the Punk’In Drublic too and he loved it.  Ck had the Parallel Pale Ale and Carie tried the Sea Breeze Lager.  They were both kind of light on the ABV which is why I didn’t try either of them but they looked beautifully golden in color.

Here is a shot of their extensive beer menu.  These are just some of the brews available.  There is another menu of the “staple” beers from Coronado and a tele screen with more listed.  It would take a long, drunk time to try each one of the brews on the board.  But I would take that challenge!

The Meaning of Life

We had just visited the Game Empire and bought some great games that we were eager to try.  Carie picked one out called Quiddler.  It’s a scrabble game with cards.  There are eight rounds and you get more cards in each successive round.  You have to try to make up words.  There were some creative ones but I think this one by Carie takes the cake.  Ck described it as a very 1980’s slang phrase.

Needless to say, Ck won the one game of Quiddler that we played and I came in 2nd place.

The tasting room is in the same big warehouse as the brewing vats and kettles as well as a bottling machine of some sort.  Possibly, maybe. Probably not.

Coronado Brewing Co. has merch set up everywhere that you can take home with you.  You can buy cans & bottles to go if drinking alone is your thing. J/K!

Or you can buy t-shirts, hoodies, key chains, and anything else you can put the CBC brand on.  They also sell Growlers in various sizes so get one filled and take it  home with you!

Not only is Coronado dog friendly, they have regular local dogs that come in all the time with their people.  I got to meet a few of them when I was there and it made my day.dsc02070

Something else that made my day was seeing the bunghole and getting to point it out with my own two fingers.

The bunghole is where the beer goes into a barrel where it stays to age and develop flavors.

TP for my bunghole.

Everything about Coronado Brewing Company is shiny and attractive and clean.  It wasn’t too crowded when we started drinking at 1:00 on Sunday but groups of people trickled in more and more as we stayed longer.  It’s the kind of place you don’t mind spending a couple of hours in.

Service is fast and friendly.  There is a food truck schedule posted for when you get the inevitable munchies.  A big hot dog was there serving weenies during the time we were there.  Unfortunately they had not bought their veggie dogs that day so they lost two sales.

I can’t wait to go back to Coronado Brewing Company!  It’s a fun and mellow place to hang out and drink.  You can bring your own card game to play or watch some balls on the tele behind the bar.

It’s in a great location, right off the 5 freeway near Sea World (boo).  The coastal breezes keep the weather all nice and cool so it never gets too hot in there.  The Coronado Brewing Co. definitely stands out among nearby breweries as one of the greats.  It was a pleasure going there and I will be back!

Redemption @BackStreetBrew!

The sweet taste of victory had not been tasted by the #Lagalots for the last two weeks of #PopQuizTrivia and we were hungry like the wolf.

Yum…dead stuff

We had failed miserably the last time as a team, would tonight be a pathetic repeat?  Heather and Paul are moving out and on and up to another city soon so this was our last time playing with them for a long while.

It was the Minicks and the Leonards on this momentous occasion.  Ck & Carie were probably busy getting it on Leprechaun style in a castle in Ireland…but who is to judge?

The green2Go food truck was there again and Paul and Heather tried their bowls.  #liveg2g offers one with tofu and two more with meat and they start at $10.  The serving sizes are small but I’m just as pleased as a pig in shit that they offer tofu.  One of these day’s I will not eat dinner before trivia and get a tofu bowl to eat.

When we got there, Heather and Paul had already ordered their beers.  Paul went with a Jagged Little Pilsner, a nice light beer to start off with, and Heather had her Holy Shizz Imperial Red Ale that she loves because it is 10.2%.  Now that’s some ABV to write home about!  Sean disappeared inside for two minutes and came back with beers for us, he had the Set Sail IPA and I copied Paul with a delicious Pilsner.

In the first round, we scored 4 with 2 wrong answers. We got the 2010 Most Powerful Woman wrong, it was Michelle Obama and not Angela Merkel.

FLOTUS is not pleased

We also got a math question wrong about some old Italian guy who made up some number sequence or something.  But coming in at 3rd place with a score of 4 is not too shabby.  Donkey Punching Kangaroo’s had the lead with a perfect score of 6.

The second round was to name 10 states that the Mississippi River goes through.  Paul is not only the sports expert but the US geography champion so we gave the answer sheet to him and let him go crazy.  When the dust settled, we got 9 correct and had a total score of 13 with DPK’s still in the lead by 2 points.

Radio stations on the left start with K and radio stations on the right start with W.  There’s some damned trivia for you

Round three was a bitch. We knew 2 Terrier breeds that weren’t named after countries but the third one, we missed.  We also knew 2 car models from different makers but didn’t get the third one either.  The last question wanted us to name three of the top listened-to artists on Spotify in 2015.

We guessed Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and some other singer and we were completely wrong!  We were way off.  We were so way off that I hadn’t even heard of the top 3 artists that were given during the answers.  That’s a young person’s game, my friend.  But we got 5 points added to our score so we didn’t complain. He might have given us credit for one of the questions because our total went to 18.  We were still tied for third place.

Round 4 handed us the task of naming 10 news anchors using their picture.

The Lovely Diane Sawyer or The One That Sean Knew

Luckily, Paul is a freaking super genius and knew 6 or 7 of them right off the bat.  Sean and Heather put in their two cents to get a few more names.  There was one picture we didn’t know and we just wanted to fill in any answer so I thought of Greta Van Susteren but I was sadly wrong.  Otherwise, we would’ve had a perfect round.  Our score at this point was 27 and we were tied for first place with a team named Instinct.

In round five, Paul and I immediately thought the Guess Who was Andy Samberg and we were convinced of it for 3 clues.  Paul wanted to turn it in after the second clue but Sean and I stuck to our guns and said, “Wait until the third clue!”

Brooklynn 99? Not his best

It was a good thing we did because in the third clue, we found out the sex of the person in question was a female so Paul and I were totally  wrong with the Lazy Sunday artist.

Heather started thinking really hard and she came up with Amy Schumer based on the clue that she was photographed by Annie Leibowitz at one point.

Hash Tag That!

We knew that was the right answer so we turned in our answer sheet after the third clue and ended up getting six points for that round bringing our total to 33 and still tied with Instinct.

The last round would determine the winner and we were ready.  Round six is just a blur at this point as I switched my beer of choice to a Set Sail IPA and it’s a bit stronger than I am used to on trivia night.

That and other stuff!

We ended up getting 5 questions right.  We knew teriyaki, the word “Gusto,” Genghis Khan, assassins, and Fender but don’t ask me what the questions were…lol!

So the final standing score was 38 for team Lagalots and 36 for Instinct.  We would’ve just won right there but Instinct had the luck of getting the bonus question correct so they got to roll the die to see what fate would deal them.

They got the choice to answer a 1 point, 2 point, or 3 point question and they decided to get greedy and go for the 3 pointer which would put them in the lead and snatching the victory from our cold dead hands.

The question was, “Who was Mary Surratt?”

Image result for mary surratt

And for 3 points to take the lead….

The anticipation grew and grew until I felt like it was choking me as we waited anxiously to see if they knew the answer.  They obviously didn’t know and were stalling their demise.

And guess what?  They didn’t know!  We won trivia again!  We were back on top!

Mary Surratt, if you’re curious, was the first woman executed by the federal government for being a coconspirator in the plot to assassinate Lincoln.

So both teams took home a growler each and it’s chilling in my fridge right now getting ready for me to enjoy the taste of victory.  I love #winning!

Pub trivia is such a fun thing to get us through the work week.  Check your local breweries and bars to see if they offer it on a certain night at your favorite place.  Thanks to BackStreet Brewery and Pop Quiz Trivia for making it a competitive event in a relaxed environment!

Lag-A-Lots: The Losers Extraordinare

The night was full of promise.  We were the reigning champions from last week’s trivia slaughter at BackStreet Brewery.  We thought we had it in the bag.  Well, I guess there was a hole in the bottom of the bag because we fell through it and landed painfully on our asses.

Backstreet was full on this last Wednesday, teeming with eager young hipsters ready to snatch up that 2 growler prize at the end of the night.  And then there was us: The Lagalots.  A group that fluctuates in numbers and varies wildly in trivial knowledge.

Tonight there were four of us in the group; me, the old man, Paul, & Heather.  We were missing Ck & Carie, down 2 good men.

We started out with beers and I got the usual, Jagged Little Pilsner, which is so tasty I can’t help but keep coming back to it.  Sean had the Set Sail IPA, which is also another tasty and strong selection from Backstreet’s menu.  They just got the Vienna Lager on Nitro in and I forgot that I wanted to try that.  I didn’t remember until the end of the night as Sean was closing up his tab.  I guess I’ll have to remember next week!

Heather tried something new, which came in a 10 ounce glass because it is more than 10% ABV.  It was called the Shizz Imperial Red Ale or something similar.  She liked it a lot and had two rounds through out the night.  Paul had a Nut Brown Ale, he likes that one a lot and has it almost everytime we do trivia night.  It’s got a nice brown color to it and is not that strong so you can drink several.

The Taco Truck that is usually there and that has such delicious soyrizo & potato tacos was gone and won’t be back.  The Pop Quiz moderator told us he would be actively seeking a replacement food truck.  Heather suggested they get the In & Out truck…sounds fine to me!

So in the first round, we came out strong.  Despite the fact that we got 2 wrong, we were tied for second place.  I mean, who knew the invention of auto-pilot would be the catalyst that started the mile-high club?  Some dorks might know that…and they did.  But we knew the sports question thanks to Paul and no one else got that one right.  Well, they didn’t cheer obnoxiously like we do when we get one.

Round two was a balls question and I immediately handed the answer sheet over to Paul.  The question had to do with the top cities that got the most money from sports like Super Bowls and Championships and what-not.  How could I know the answers when I barely understood the question?  Luckily, Paul came to the rescue again and filled out all ten answers and got all ten right.  At the end of round 2, we had 14 points and we were tied with 3 other teams for first place.

Then shit started going downhill.  In round three, we got most of them right but then a ton of other teams did too.  Ususally we use round three to secure our place as first but it wasn’t working out that way.  Then some asshole from a team that got the bonus question right got to roll the dice and his roll enabled him to steal a point from one team and give it to another.  So the jerk-off choses to steal the point from us.  What a cunt face, I curse him to hell!  If only I knew his name!

Round four was the picture round and there were ten pictures of different reptiles that you had to identify.  It took a while, but we got six out of ten correct.  But i was upset that we wrote down turtle for one instead of tortoise, which was the right answer.  I should’ve known better.  My Myrtle Turtle would be pissed at me if she knew.  We were in 3rd place by the end of that round.

Shame on you, Mommy

The “guess who” round is always the most difficult and we learned an important lesson last night.  It’s ironic because we seem to need to learn this lesson every time we play.  No matter how fucking sure any of us are about who the mystery person is, we need to wait until the 3rd clue to be absolutely sure.  We only get six points that way but it’s a lot better than no points; which is what we got last night because we jumped the gun and answered wrong.  Fuck you, Tom Selleck.

The sixth and last round was pointless for us.  We doubled down because we had nothing to lose but even if we had gotten all the points for being right, we still wouldn’t have been close to winning.  All the other teams knew Tom Selleck in the previous round so they were way ahead of us.  We only got one out of six questions wrong but since we did double or nothing, we got nothing.  Our final trivia score was 25.  Sean and I have done better than that on our own.  Very disappointing.

It looks like the Lagalots have some serious competition from here on out.  But they can all go to hell because we are putting on our A game from now on.  Of course, we can’t go to redeem ourselves next week because we’ll be at the San Diego Comic Con.  Maybe Heather & Paul, and Ck & Carie can pull off a win….we deserve it! So get ready, mother fuckers!
